The durability of stainless steel is due to the Chromium coating that is actually chemically bonded to the steel. What this virtually invisible coating does is protect the steel underneath from oxidation (tarnishing and rusting). It also protects against scratches by taking the initial impact of a scratch and then resealing itself. This phenomenon is called passivation. Passivation is the spontaneous formation of a hard non-reactive surface film that inhibits further corrosion.

If stainless steel is better than silver, gold and titanium then why is it less expensive.
